Until now, with few exceptions, I have kept the shape of photographs the same as that of the camera's sensor. I decided to experiment and crop selected photographs (none of which were posed) from Egypt to 1 x 1 and 9 x 16. In some cases the cropping is so severe that picture resolution was compromised. C'est la vie. The photographs were chosen so that the cropping improved the composition of the photograph, or at least gave a different impression. (Personal opinion) A square format seems to be appropriate for many portraits, while 9 x 16 works well with photographs in which a sense of breadth is appropriate. I will be more open minded about cropping dimensions in the future.
